Marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, 24, and his coach died in car crash

Marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, 24, and his coach died in a car accident, former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga said on social network X.

The accident occurred on a road linking two towns in western Kenya, in a high-altitude region known as a training ground for long-distance runners.

“In devastating news, we mourn the loss of a remarkable man, Kelvin Kiptum, world record holder and Kenyan athletics icon. Along with their coach, they died tragically [в воскресенье] evening following an accident.

My deepest condolences go to his family, friends and the entire sporting community. Our nation mourns the profound loss of a true hero,” Odinga wrote.

Last year, Kiptum won the Chicago Marathon in 2 hours 35 seconds and broke compatriot Eliud Kipchoge’s world record.
