Russian figure skater Ivan Makhnonosov who participates in ice dancing with Ekaterina Rybakova, told in an interview with what he experienced before the start of the Russian Junior Championships, when his grandmother died.
At the Russian Junior Championships in Saransk, Makhnonosov and Rybakova scored 186.40 points in two programs and won gold medals.
— After the tournament, you dedicated your victory to your deceased grandmother. How long ago did she die? Did this affect your preparation?
— This happened on Saturday January 13th. Less than a month before the start of the Russian Championship. I came home from training, everything was fine, grandmother was in a good mood.
And then there was a brain hemorrhage. They called an ambulance and my grandmother died in my arms. And that’s no way to speak… I held her in my arms when she left…
A day later I went to practice and I was prostrate. But it’s my professional activity, I had to prepare myself. My grandmother wanted me to continue doing what I loved. She took me to training when I was little. She loved Katya and me very much. I watched all the competitions on TV. She is always with us, in our hearts and in our warmest memories.
— How did your loved ones react to the symbolic gesture in honor of your grandmother?
– Everyone thanked me. I didn’t plan anything in advance, I decided after the fact, after the victory. I asked the coaches if it was possible. “I received approval and said what I considered necessary,” Makhnonosov told .
