Honored coach of Russia Inna Goncharenko admitted that the skater’s decision Alexandra Samarina ending her professional career was a surprise for her.
On Saturday, Samarin announced his retirement after performing his free program at the Spartakiad of the Strongest. Alexander took last place in Magnitogorsk.
— For me, Samarin’s announcement regarding his retirement came as a surprise. I thought he would always please us with his performances. Perhaps psychological fatigue has taken its toll as the end of the season approaches.
Sasha is an interesting and brilliant athlete, he always shows the desire to win and fight. It’s a shame he ended his career. I think Samarin could have done more. But all people have their own sporting and personal destiny. Sasha has always worked to the max.
Of course, Samarin could prove himself as a figure skating coach. The knowledge accumulated by Sasha is enough to train if he wants,” Goncharenko was quoted as saying by Sport24.
Samarin is 25 years old, at the 2019 European Championships he won a silver medal in single skating and at the 2019 World Team Championships he became a bronze medalist.
