Personal tournament performance at 2014 Olympics could have ended in Plushenko’s death, Rudkovskaya says

Wife of the double Olympic champion Evgenia Plushenko Yana Rudkovskaya, in an interview with RT, spoke about her husband’s injury during the Sochi Olympics in 2014.

In his fourth Games, Plushenko helped the team win gold in the team tournament, after which he retired from individual competition due to a back injury.

– If the withdrawal from the 2014 Games in Sochi was really a scenario, I would have, believe me, calculated it to the smallest detail. The problem is that what happened could not be predicted at all. After the team tournament, Zhenya signed all withdrawal documents, all of which have been kept to this day. But at three in the morning the next day, right after doping control, we were dragged into a meeting. I always have this image in front of me: Alexey Mishin, Alexander Gorshkov and Vitaly Mutko call – and they all say that the situation is hopeless and that you must participate. Zhenya tried to object – he was in terrible pain. And yet he was persuaded, – said Rudkovskaya.

– As the surgeon Ilya Pekarsky, who operated on Zhenya in Israel, later said, if the husband had not taken off after warming up, but went skating on the program and fell, then most likely he would have died on the ice . Zhenya himself later admitted that the pain was such that he did not really understand what was happening to him. Probably, I am also to blame here: it was necessary to dissuade Evgeny from speaking. But he was too convinced that he alone is capable of helping the team, she added.
