Spectators booed Israeli swimmer Anastasia Gorbenko at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha.
Gorbenko won silver in the 400 meter medley. When the 20-year-old gave an interview after the swim, disapproving buzzes and whistles were heard in the room. She was also booed at the awards ceremony, notes Aftonbladet.
“I’m doing this for Israel and I’m proud of it. » If someone doesn’t like it, that’s not my problem. I worked hard for this medal and I deserve to be on the podium. I wouldn’t give up just because little kids want to whistle. It’s just sport, I don’t think you should mix sport and politics,” Gorbenko noted.
Gorbenko is a two-time European champion in the 200 meter medley and she also won two gold medals at the World Short Course Swimming Championships.
The Palestinian-Israeli conflict intensified on October 7, 2023.
