Carlsen refuses to defend world title in 2023

The winner of the Candidates Tournament Nepomniachtchi will fight for the title with Ding Liren

World Chess Champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen announced that he would not defend the title in 2023.

“I have been thinking about this for over a year. I have no motivation to play another match. I don’t get much from it, I don’t like it too much. Although historically the fight would be interesting, I have no desire and I just won’t play it, ”said the world champion.

“I was in Madrid at the end of the Candidates Tournament. I met with the FIDE leadership and told about my decision. I did not put forward any demands or proposals.”

In accordance with FIDE rules, the winner of the Candidates Tournament, Yang Nepomniachtchi, and Ding Liren, who took second place in this tournament, will compete for the vacant title.

Magnus Carlsen became the champion for the first time in 2013. In December 2021, the Norwegian defended his world title for the fourth time in a match against Nepomniachtchi.
