Previously, the Norwegian had turned down a world title match with Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi.
“Magnus Carlsen deserves nothing but the respect of FIDE and the entire chess community, whatever decision he makes regarding his career. Only a handful of people in history can understand and appreciate the huge effort that goes into five games for the title.
His decision not to defend his title is arguably a disappointment for fans and bad news for the series. This leaves a big void,” the organization’s press office said in a statement.
