Napoli will soon fire Mazzarri as head coach

Walter will be replaced by Slovakia national team coach Kalzona

Napoli intends to resign soon Walter Mazzarri from the position of head coach.

A successor to the experienced specialist has been found – this is the current coach of the Slovak national team Francesco Calzona. The deal is already at the final stage. The club wants to complete this transfer before the match with Barcelona in the Champions League, which will take place on Wednesday, February 21.

Earlier it was reported that the Slovak Football Federation had already approved for the coach to combine work in the national team and Napoli until the end of the current season. Napoli legend Marek Hamsik may join the new coach’s coaching staff.

Mazzarri once worked fruitfully with the Parthenopeans from 2009 to 2013. But his second arrival at the club from the south of Italy was not successful. Let us remember that 62-year-old Walter returned to the club in November last year, replacing Rudi Garcia. In 17 matches under his leadership, Napoli won only six wins and eight defeats.

Calzone is 55 years old. He previously worked as an assistant coach at various Italian clubs. He spent several years at Napoli – as a member of the coaching staff of Maurizio Sarri (2015 – 2018) and Luciano Spalletti (2021/22). Since the summer of 2022, he has led the Slovakian national team, with which he managed to directly qualify for Euro 2024.

Napoli is in ninth place in the Serie A standings. The club had previously been relegated from Coppa and also lost to Inter in the Italian Super Cup. This week the Neapolitans will play the first match of the 1/8 finals of the Champions League with Barcelona.
