Bellew: Fury is an aggressive counter-puncher and that won’t work against Usyk

Tony is confident in Alexander’s victory over Tyson

Former world cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew predicted the victory of the world champion according to WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO versions Alexandra Usika in the upcoming fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion against the WBC title holder Tyson Fury.

“I don’t think anyone will beat Oleksandr Usyk. I don’t think anyone will beat him. I talked about this a long time ago. The crazy thing here is that I believe that when Fury worked with his uncle, he would have beaten Usyk. But his style has changed, and now he is an aggressive counter-puncher, and that will not work against Usyk.”

“I think he has a chance as a puncher now, but he’s not a big puncher. Honestly, I think Fury is a great fighter, I’m not taking anything away from him. What he’s done at heavyweight is amazing, but I think Oleksandr Usyk is the best heavyweight in the world.”

Usik met Bellew in 2018 in a fight for the world cruiserweight titles. The Ukrainian won by technical knockout in the eighth round. After the fight, Bellew announced his retirement from his professional career.

Fury and Usyk were scheduled to fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion on February 17. Lennox Lewis was appointed special guest of the event, and the undercard included fights between former IBF world champion in the first heavyweight division Jay Opetai, 19-year-old Moses Itauma and IBF world super featherweight champion Joe Cordina.

Two weeks before the fight, Fury was injured during sparring. The Briton’s injury required stitches. Opinions among functionaries about Tyson’s injury were divided. British cutman Jorge Capetillo believes that the boxer will need at least three months to recover. His position is shared by the brother of former “interim” WBC champion Dillian Whyte, Dean White.

In turn, the Ukrainian team – Egis Klimas and Alexander Krasyuk – criticized Fury and his team. The head of the promotion company Top Rank, Bob Arum, spoke in defense of the Gypsy King.

The unification fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion has received a new date – Fury and Usik are scheduled to meet in the ring on May 18. The event, as before, will be hosted by the capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh. The WBC proposes to reform the judges for the reporting fight, increasing their number to 5-6 people.

Penalties for boxers who refuse to fight are $10 million. At the same time, the contract for the fight between the Ukrainian and the British has a rematch clause.
