Fasel, former IIHF president: “I really like Valieva, I hope she has the opportunity to return to the ice”

Former President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) René Fasel said he liked the figure skater Kamila Valieva and hopes she can return to the show after her suspension ends.

The “Games of the Future” will take place in Kazan from February 21 to March 3. Valieva attended the opening ceremony of the competition, which took place on Wednesday in Kazan.

— Did you manage to talk to Kamila Valieva during the opening ceremony?

– I had such an opportunity. I really like Kamila Valieva, she is a wonderful figure skater, I hope she gets the opportunity to return to the ice.

— Weren’t you surprised that an athlete suspended for doping was here as a guest of honor?

“We didn’t discuss it with her yesterday, we just greeted each other.” When this situation happened to him, I was in Beijing. “I’m really sorry for Kamila,” reports the correspondent, Fazel’s words.

At the end of January, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. The 17-year-old Russian’s suspension period begins on December 25, 2021, and her results have been canceled since that date. The court’s decision led to a review of the results of the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Olympics, where the Russian team won. First place is now awarded to the American team, the Japanese are second and the Russians will receive bronze. Valieva is also deprived of gold at the 2022 European Championship.

The competition will be broadcast on the channels of the Match sub-holding, as well as on streaming platforms.
