International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach called on the Japanese Yuzuru Hanyu a true Olympic champion and wishes the skater good luck in the next steps of his career.
On Tuesday, two-time Olympic figure skating champion Yuzuru Hanyu announced at a press conference that he was ending his amateur career and turning professional. In the future, the 27-year-old Japanese athlete plans to organize his own ice show.
“Congratulations on an outstanding Olympic career. You are a true Olympic champion. Good luck in the next steps of your figure skating career. We will follow you and look forward to a new meeting,” Bach said citing the IOC’s Twitter account.
Hanyu won Olympic gold medals in 2014 and 2018, and also won World Championship gold twice (2014, 2017). At the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Hanyu finished fourth.
