Gutzeit: I see a chance that Russia will independently refuse to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games

Now the Russian Federation has seven licenses for the Olympics in Paris

Head of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine Vadim Gutzeit commented on the CAS decision to reject the appeal of the Russian Olympic Committee to return membership in the International Olympic Committee.

“Every step towards ensuring that Russia is not at the Olympic Games and in international sports in general is truly a big victory for all Ukrainians and all our athletes.”

“They remained where they should remain – outside the Olympic movement. This is a message that such an organization as OCR has no place in the Olympic movement and in the IOC. This is such an image decision. There are small victories, there are image victories and defeats. This is an image defeat for Russia, but for us it is an image victory.”

“When Russia was not officially invited to the Olympic Games, we returned to international sports, began to compete, fight for licenses – now we already have 57 of them. And we monitor what is happening in each sport.”

“In many types, they no longer managed to obtain licenses because time has already passed. And in many forms, they themselves refuse to participate in licensed competitions without a flag and symbols. I found out that they already have 7 licenses. Compare with the fact that they always had 350, and now 7. Maybe they will get some 10-15-20 more – this is nothing at all. “I see that there is a chance that they will abandon the Olympic Games by holding alternative competitions in Russia.”

Today, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) of Lausanne rejected the appeal of the Russian Olympic Committee for the return of membership in the International Olympic Committee. In its decision, the CAS noted that the IOC decision remains valid, and the procedure for deprivation of membership took place within the framework of legal acts.

In October last year, the IOC officially suspended the activities of the Olympic Committee for violating the Olympic Charter. The reason was the inclusion of “Olympic councils” from the occupied territories of Ukraine into the latter.

In November, the IOC called for the abandonment of the World Friendship Games, which Russia had planned for September 2024.

At the same time, earlier the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, spoke about the IOC’s desire to return athletes from Russia and Belarus to international competitions “for the sake of uniting the whole world at the Olympic Games.” The German called the position of Ukraine, which opposed the admission of all athletes from aggressor countries, “unconstructive.”

Back in March, the IOC Executive Committee recommended the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions in a neutral status.

In the early hours of February 24, Russia launched rocket and air strikes on most Ukrainian cities and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The Russian war against Ukraine has continued for the 730th day.
