Russian State Duma deputy and Olympic speed skating champion Svetlana Jourova believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to support figure skater Kamila Valieva after her disqualification.
Valieva was alongside Putin at the opening ceremony of the Future Games in Kazan on February 21.
— At the opening of the Olympic Games in Sochi, a beautiful girl (sledder Irina Skvortsova) sat next to the president, who unfortunately was seriously injured. The President wanted to support and show that we are not abandoning ours. The country is very sensitive to such cases, especially those involving women.
After everything that happened with Valieva, I think the president (also) wanted to support her. I liked the opening ceremony. There are impressions of achievements, of what we aspire to,” Zhurova said, as quoted by Betonmobile.
At the end of January, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) suspended Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. The 17-year-old Russian’s suspension period begins on December 25, 2021, and her results have been canceled since that date.
