Athletistic / Figure skating. Silver medalist at the European Championships, Russian figure skater Alexander Samarin explained why he decided to end his career. The athlete hung up his skates at the age of 25.

“The announcement of my retirement was not some sort of emotional outburst. I just understand that I am already physically and emotionally exhausted.

Last season, I still managed to get a breath of fresh air and be reborn. But with each start, I realize more and more clearly that I am no longer fighting for first place. I see the same Zhenya Semenenko and Mark Kondratyuk playing – they are at their peak. And I don’t have enough light anymore,” Samarin said, as quoted by RIA Novosti Sport.

Alexander Samarin took the last, 11th place at the 2024 Spartakiad, earning 224.91 points in total from two programs (short and free). Evgeny Semenenko won the competition in Magnitogorsk (304.40).

Samarin won silver at the European Championships in 2019. The same year, at the World Team Championship, he helped the Russian team become bronze medalists.
