Athletistic / Water polo. Soviet Olympic water polo champion Vladimir Akimov will be enshrined in the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF). This was announced by Olympic diving champion Elena Vaitsekhovskaya.
“Volodya’s career and mine happened at the same time. He and I trained for many years in the same pool, playing for CSKA, so I am especially happy that the world aquatic community voted for Volodya .
Akimov died at the age of 34 – by today’s standards this is not an age for a player at all, but all subsequent generations of water polo players could not even dream of his track record. .”, wrote Vaitsekhovskaya in her Telegram channel.
Vladimir Akimov is Olympic champion at the 1980 Games in Moscow, World Cup winner (1981), world champion (1982) and multiple European and USSR champion. Akimov died tragically under unclear circumstances at the age of 34 (October 5, 1987).
