Three-time Olympic champion, deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Irina Rodnina told that she wanted to know at whose expense the Russian side filed three appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the redistribution of medals from the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Olympics.

The CAS announced on Monday the registration of four appeals against the ISU decision on the redistribution of medals for the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games: from the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), from the Russian Federation of Figure Skating (FFKKR), Russian Figure Skaters, and the Canadian Figure Skating Federation.

– Good idea! But it is admitted that Valieva possessed a prohibited drug, in particular that of RUSADA. She had the right to appeal. But from what I understand, Valieva’s supporters had previously challenged the duration and countdown of the disqualification, and not the presence of a banned drug. Is there any point in challenging the ISU decision now? I wonder, for whose money did such vigorous activity take place? Maybe it’s government money? Or sponsorship? In general, appealing to CAS now is like shooting into the sky. I wish them all good luck in court, but I don’t see the point in this appeal.

Regarding the appeal of the Canadians, I can say that everything is clearly written in the rules. Then demand a change in the rules. But if the rule is changed, the law does not apply retroactively. What’s the point of waving your fists now? Only if you remember it again,” Rodnina told .

At the end of January, the CAS suspended Kamila Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. The 17-year-old Russian’s suspension period begins on December 25, 2021, and her results have been canceled since that date. The athlete’s sample contained banned trimetazidine.

The CAS decision led to a review of the results of the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Games, in which the Russian team won. First place is now awarded to the American team, the Japanese are second, the Russians will receive bronze. The Canadians took fourth place.
