Messi, Djokovic and Verstappen are in the running for Sportsman of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards

The awards ceremony will take place in Madrid on April 22

Organizers of the prestigious award Laureus World Sports Awards announced the nominees for the title best athlete 2023.

The list of contenders includes Inter Miami striker Lionel Messiwho has won this award twice, as well as Manchester City forward Erling Holland. World No. 1 tennis player claims title of best athlete Novak Djokovic, who has previously won this category four times. Other candidates include the current Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappenworld record holder in pole vault Armand Duplantisand also an American runner Noah Lyles.

Let us remind you that Ukrainian Paralympic swimmer Daniil Chufarov was shortlisted for the “Disabled Athlete of the Year” award at the Laureus Prize. In 2023, Daniil won three gold medals and one silver, and set two world records at the World Paralympic Swimming Championships in Manchester – 14 years after his last major title at a similar world championship in 2009.

The 2024 Laureus World Sports Awards (also known as the “Sports Oscars”) will be presented in various categories in Madrid on April 22.
