Figure skating coach Gurgen Vardanyan has received Russian citizenship, according to the official legal information portal.
The corresponding decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Vardanyan is a former Soviet singles skater, born in Yerevan in 1963. In 1987 he became a coach. From 2018 to 2023 he worked as sports director of the Hungarian Figure Skating Federation. He left this post in May last year, which was preceded by scandals: parents of local skaters complained that Vardanyan was giving places in the team to Russian-speaking athletes.
