Former sports director of the Hungarian Figure Skating Federation Gurgen Vardanyan told that he was happy to receive Russian citizenship because he really loves Moscow, Russia and Russian figure skating.
Earlier it became known that Vardanyan received Russian citizenship. The corresponding decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
— I am very happy to have received Russian citizenship. I have long wanted to get a Russian passport because I was a citizen of the Soviet Union. I had thought about doing this earlier, but I went to Hungary, I thought I would be there temporarily, but I stayed there for a bit. Now everything went well. My sister lives in Moscow with my three nephews. I wanted to obtain Russian citizenship so that I could visit them more easily. I really love Moscow, Russia and Russian figure skating,” Vardanyan told .
Vardanyan is a former Soviet singles skater, born in Yerevan in 1963. In 1987 he became a coach and in 1989 he moved to Hungary to work with local skaters. From 2018 to 2023 he worked as sports director of the Hungarian Figure Skating Federation. He left this post in May last year, which was preceded by scandals: parents of local skaters complained that Vardanyan was giving places in the team to Russian-speaking athletes.
