Marta spoke about a difficult victory over a “neutral” opponent in a match where weather conditions caused additional difficulties
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk shared her emotions after defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals of the tournament WTA 500 in American San Diego.
“Thanks to the audience, everyone who stayed after the rain. It was so loud! It was truly incredible, thank you! I think the fact that it started to rain surprised everyone here, including us. I was sure that I would stay on the court until one in the morning because I wanted to finish this match today. That is, I didn’t know how long this pause due to the rain would last, but I tried to stay warm. I changed clothes, ate something, but during such breaks you never know what exactly to do, what exactly will help you.”
“The score was very close. I think we were both pretty nervous after the break. On the court I tried to do just the right things and just move my feet. It was difficult because usually by this time I’m already asleep. So it wasn’t easy.”
“Regarding the next match against Pegula, I will say that we have already met twice. I lost the last match very quickly. Therefore, I hope that tomorrow I will stay on the court longer. Jess is an incredible fighter, she has very flat punches, so tomorrow I will need to throw from a low point, bend over. I know she’s American, but I hope the audience will come tomorrow and cheer again.”
Let us remind you that Kostyuk won a very difficult victory over her opponent, who competes under a neutral flag. The Ukrainian lost the first set, but managed to turn the game around and made it to her first semi-final at the WTA level in a year.
In the semi-finals of the tournament, Marta will play against the first seeded Jessica Pegula, who is in the top 5 of the world rankings.
