“Hanyu is an era of figure skating, he has done a lot for this sport” – Bobrova

Olympic champion Ekaterina Bobrova commented on Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu’s decision to end his professional career.

Earlier Tuesday at a press conference, the 27-year-old skater announced his retirement and transition to the pros.

“Congratulations to Yuzuru for this decision. For the fans who support him around the world, it’s a loss. I read that Hanyu was going to do his own show, and it’s a big plus that we will continue to see him on the ice. Unfortunately, now not in competitions, but he had an amazing, brilliant, incredible career and many other epithets.

He is a double Olympic champion. At his last Olympics, he tried to do what no one would dare to do – jump the axle in four and a half turns. In any case, Yuzuru is an era of figure skating, he did a lot for this sport, many skaters admired him, and all of Hanyu will remain in the hearts of a unique and memorable athlete who shone in every program.

Who are we going to talk about in the same admiring tone now?

For me, it’s Nathan Chen. But I insist that I don’t want another Yuzuru Hanyu in figure skating. I want to see other people, skaters should not imitate someone. They should be better than Yuzu, if possible. They must be different.

The fact that Hanyu is into figure skating is amazing. I am very happy to have participated in the same competitions with him and to have watched him with my own eyes when he skated his programs,” Bobrova told .

Hanyu won Olympic gold medals in 2014 and 2018, and also won World Championship gold twice (2014, 2017).

At the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, the Japanese took fourth place.
