Norwegian skier Teresa Johaug admitted that she could participate in the world championship on home soil, which will be held in Trondheim in 2025.
The skier retired after the end of the 2021/22 season and later worked in television. Last May, Johaug gave birth to her first child.
“I look forward to the moment when the women’s 50 kilometer race takes place for the first time at the World Championships. I want and hope to be there, but I understand there is a lot of work to do. No one will be happy if I finish fourth, I know everyone will say: ‘You should have got a gold medal’. It’s my aim.
But if I want to compete in Trondheim, I have to qualify for the national team. At the same time, I don’t want to compete during the entire World Cup season,” Johaug quotes NRK as referring to her interview with the organizers of the Skimarathon Engadin marathon.
At the same time, the athlete’s manager Jorn Ernst noted in an interview with VG.no that it was too early to talk about the 35-year-old skier’s full return.
“The decision will be made soon,” Ernst said.
In May 2023, the Council of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) decided to equalize the distances of the men’s and women’s races at the world championships (10, 20 and 50 km). This innovation has been practiced in the World Cup since the 2022/23 season.
Johaug is a four-time Olympic champion, she also has 14 world championship gold medals and three overall World Cup victories.
