Marta recalled the recent shelling of Odessa
Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk spoke emotionally at the final awards ceremony of the WTA 500 tournament in San Diego (USA).
“Hi all. First of all, to everyone in the stands, to everyone who watches us on TV – Glory to Ukraine! I don’t want to upset you, sorry. First of all, I want to say thank you to my family back home. The last few nights have been difficult for Ukraine and very… sorry (cries).”
“My family is now in Ukraine, and I don’t know what will happen tomorrow, but there is no one who sacrificed more for my career than them. And I want to dedicate this little trophy to them and I want them to see me win as often as possible. This trophy is for them. So, thank you.”
“Congratulations Katie, great tournament. You’ve come a long way to get here. Thanks to my team for being here with me. Sorry I didn’t receive the surfboard today, I will get it next year. We have also come a long way. Thanks to the fans, you stayed with us throughout all these cold evenings. This is true dedication. I don’t think I could stand such cold evenings in the stands. So thank you very much. Thank you all again and congratulations to you, Katie.”
Let us recall that a few days ago Russia carried out a drone strike on a residential apartment building in Odessa. The victims of the tragedy were 12 people, including five children.
Kostyuk lost to Briton Katie Boulter in the final of the WTA 500 tournament. In the new WTA rankings, Marta rose to 32nd place.
