“It’s better to do it now than when your abilities diminish” – Pogorilaya-Nevskaya on the end of Khanyu’s career

Bronze medalist at the World Figure Skating Championships Anna Pogorilaya-Nevskaya in a conversation with , she expressed the opinion that the double Olympic champion is Japanese Yuzuru Hanyu made the opportune decision to end his sporting career.

– I think you still have to be able to finish your career, and he completes it with a good result. In winter, it turns out, he already had the third Olympics. Of course, injuries also affect, and I think he rationally assesses his abilities. Next season, of course, is incomprehensible, since the Russian team will not participate in the competition. Nevertheless, Japanese and American athletes will be – they are strong enough. Therefore, the competition will always be very high. So, I repeat, I think he rationally assesses his abilities. However, I hope he still puts on the show. Of course, it’s a shame that he’s ending his sporting career, but it would be better now than with a decline in his abilities. Still, it ends beautifully. It should be noted that he is very aware of his condition. Now there are already quite a few Japanese athletes ahead of him,” Pogorilaya-Nevskaya told .

Earlier Tuesday at a press conference, the 27-year-old skater announced his retirement and transition to the pros. Hanyu won Olympic gold medals in 2014 and 2018, and also won World Championship gold twice (2014, 2017).

At the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, the Japanese took fourth place.
