Olympic champion Roman Kostomarov declared that he would not participate in competitions for people with disabilities.
In early 2023, Kostomarov was hospitalized due to complications from pneumonia. The 47-year-old athlete began suffering from tissue necrosis and underwent several limb amputations. Kostomarov then underwent prosthetic surgery.
— Do you still have any fears?
– I’m not afraid for myself. To a greater extent, I fear for the inevitability of our life, it ends sooner or later. I am very kind to my loved ones, I don’t want to lose my family and friends. When my little dog died before my eyes, it was an impossible spectacle, almost heartbreaking. When you break up with your loved ones, it’s probably a disaster.
— There are cybatlet competitions. You don’t want to go?
– I’m not a cybatlet. Even though I’m in this state, I did my part to compete. I just want to live normally and feel more comfortable every day. I no longer need to prove anything in sport. They offer to go sailing, but I don’t need it, ”reports correspondent Kostomarov.
Kostomarov, together with Tatyana Navka, won gold at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, also became world champion twice and won the European Championships three times.
