International Paralympic Committee: Neutral athletes will be vetted to ensure they do not support the war in Ukraine or have military ties

Regulations for the admission of athletes in neutral status to the 2024 Paralympics have been published

International Paralympic Committee (IPC) published regulations for the participation of neutral Paralympic athletes (NPA) at 2024 Paralympic Games V Paris.

Athletes from Russia and Belarus who receive “neutral” status will undergo strict vetting to ensure they do not support the war in Ukraine or are contracted to the aggressor military forces.

In addition, NPCs:

  • will compete individually in neutral uniforms under a neutral flag;
  • will not appear in the medal count of the competition;
  • will not march at the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games.

Let us recall that back in September 2023, the IPC General Assembly decided to admit Russians in a neutral status to the 2024 Paralympic Games, as well as to the world championships and regional competitions. Later, in December, athletes from Russia and Belarus in the same status were admitted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to the 2024 Olympic Games.

Acting Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Matvey Bedny called the above-mentioned IOC decision “irresponsible.” Later, the head of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine, Vadim Gutzeit, spoke about plans to assemble his own admission database regarding “neutral” athletes admitted to the 2024 Olympic Games.

Early in the morning of February 24, 2022, Russia fired rockets and aerial bombardment of most Ukrainian cities, and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The war against Russia has continued for the 742nd day.
