The Olympic ice dancing champion of the 1988 Games in Calgary (Canada), Soviet and Russian figure skater Natalia Bestemyanova, reacted to the comments of the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov on the inferiority of figure skating competitions without the Russian team.
“Of course, Russian figure skaters are the strongest in the world. Without their participation, we can say that international competitions are inferior,” Bestemyanova said in Sport-Express.

After the start of the special military operation (SVO) of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine, the Council of the International Skating Union (ISU) suspended Russian and Belarusian athletes from participation in international competitions. This ban has been in effect since March 2022 and has already been extended twice by the ISU.
