Skier Arina Maksimova told that she suffered several fractures and a dislocation of the ulna of her arm following a fall during the mass start at the Student Spartakiade in Sochi.
On Friday, during a race on the track of the Laura ski and biathlon complex, several minor skiers suffered injuries of varying severity as a result of a collapse. Maksimova was among 14 athletes who failed to finish.
– How do you feel?
— After the hospital, I returned to the team. My arm hurts a little, but if you take painkillers, it’s normal and tolerable. I have a closed fracture, a dislocation of the left ulna, a closed marginal fracture of the left humerus and a closed marginal intra-articular fracture of the left ulna.
— When you read the diagnosis, aren’t you afraid?
– Scary. It was unexpected that everything happened like this. When I fell, I didn’t even realize my arm was broken. It hurt, but I didn’t think it would be like this.
—How long will it take you to recover?
“You have to wear a cast for three weeks and then go back to the hospital.” It is clear that (we must) exclude physical activity.
-Do you remember how the fall happened?
— I started in number 30, there was a gap between the girls, that is to say we didn’t go into a big crowd. I see there is fog ahead, the girls are falling. I thought I could get around the edge, but there was another girl riding there. In the end, she and I fell. It was unexpected that this happened. I thought I had at most a bruise or a sprain.
— They say that on this descent, we can accelerate up to 80 km/h?
– Yes, it’s terrible there. Very scary.
— Was first aid provided immediately? You didn’t have to wait?
“They put a splint on me and injected me with anesthesia, then they took me to the hospital. I was immediately removed from the track. First (they put me) in an ambulance, they took me down, they put me in another. They didn’t take me to Sochi, but not far from here. They did everything quickly: scan, surgery. I was in the hospital for about five hours.
— Do you need help now?
“You don’t need any help, because everything is fine.” The main thing is not to be positive. What’s the point of being sad? It won’t get better. The situation is unpleasant, but everything is fine when there are good people nearby,” Maksimova told .
