Coach of the Russian national cross-country ski team Egor Sorine urged not to look for those responsible for the collapse of students at Spartakiad, as a result of which several athletes were injured, noting that falls on the tracks are an integral part of this sport.
On Friday, during the women’s race from the general start in the village of Estosadok (Krasnodar Territory), several skiers were injured as a result of a collapse. The president of the Russian Ski Racing Federation (FLGR), Elena Vyalbe, told that two athletes were in hospital: one suffered a head injury, the second had a broken arm. In total, 14 skiers failed to finish on the Laura slope.
“Yesterday was a difficult day for the entire ski community. The result is very sad for all the athletes who got into trouble. But let’s not be dramatic. When sending children to professional sports, we cannot help but be aware of the risks associated with skiing, as with many other sports. Tell me a sport where there is no risk of injury?
Visibility was sufficient for competitions of this age. The course was much simpler than the Olympic version, the descent was straight, without turns, and the speeds were low, given the fresh snow. But the fall and the emotions of several skiers caused panic and massive falls. It was difficult to predict. The jury could play it safe and cancel (the race), but then we will cancel a lot of starts in the cold, in the snow, in the rain or on icy roads.
Ski racing is a difficult sport. Injuries, extreme stress, falls on downhills (roller skating, cycling) are an integral part of our sport. This is why I ask you not to look for the culprits. Those responsible for organizing these competitions will draw conclusions and in the future try to protect athletes, especially young people. Health and speedy recovery to all injured skiers, – wrote Sorin on the Telegram channel .
The investigative department of the Adler region organized an investigation into the incident. The progress and results of the inspection were monitored by the investigation department.
