Former Russian figure skater Betina Popova believes that existing rules in figure skating interfere with athletes.
– Are the existing rules in figure skating binding? Yes, they bond. What to change? This question is always asked, but I say that the ISU is moving in the right direction. If we take the trade-off as it should be, initially one component does not depend on the other. If you have a good glide, it doesn’t mean that you have great combinations or that you have an excellent performance or a great program composition. No, it doesn’t mean anything: you can have bad musicality with good glide.
If there is such an assessment, then it becomes easier to work in this system, and in general there is no need to change anything. It all depends on how everything is valued. Unfortunately, all the components meet the same criteria, for example, the average level of the components of this pair goes to eight, and that’s it – everyone will be the eight, but the fact that the combinations were cool, but he n there was no skate control at all, is not taken into account. Or vice versa: here it skates so cool, let’s put it on the ropes.
If this judgment is aligned, in terms of all the components being evaluated separately, as well as the benefits being evaluated as they should be, then in general there is no need to change anything in the rules . They have a lot to find. I look at the Montreal group and I see that they have mastered the strict rules of the dance. After bypassing all the restrictions, they have put together cool and completely different light programs for all couples. In pairs with restrictions it is easier – there are not so many of them, you can get creative with them, but everything is based on the elements, as in one. These rules may work if you change the notation. Then everyone will be challenged to improve both ligaments, glide, performance, program composition and musicality, Popova told the championship.
Popova began her career in individual skating, then moved on to ice dancing, where she partnered with Yuri Vlasenko.
Together with Sergey Mozgov, Popova became the winner of the Universiade (2019), the silver medalist of the Russian Cup (2017, 2019) and took part in the Grand Prix stages.
