On March 8, having beaten Kolos (3:2) in the 20th round match, Shakhtar returned to first place in the UPL standings. The current champion of Ukraine has not risen to first place, at least in fact, for 153 days. In total, over 20 rounds, five clubs were the actual leaders of the Ukrainian championship.
When assessing the tournament path of the UPL leaders, it is necessary to take into account that of the 20 rounds held, exactly half – ten – were played in full on the planned dates. The reason for this is the participation of Ukrainian clubs in European cups, the full-scale military invasion of Russia, and the lack of proper conditions at the stadiums. Moreover, as of March 11, only six teams played the planned 20 rounds of the UPL: a little more than a third of all participants in the elite division.
Having taken the lead in the championship, Shakhtar extended its time at the top of the UPL for the 2023/2024 season to six rounds. The last time the Miners were at the top of the UPL was on the morning of October 7th. The next day, Krivbass beat Chernomorets and, taking advantage of the postponement of the match between Shakhtar and Zarya, took the lead.
The leader in the number of rounds played at the top of the standings remains Krivbass, which was in the lead for a total of seven rounds. In total, five clubs rose to the first line of the UPL 2023/2024 table. In addition to Shakhtar and Krivbass, these are Dnepr-1, Dynamo and Rukh. The Dnipro team actually led the championship in a total of three rounds, the Kiev team and the Lviv team – two each.
