Marta considers the event in the USA one of the best of the season
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk commented on reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament WTA 1000 in American Indian Wells.
“In the first set I felt that a lot of things weren’t working, but that’s the mentality of a tennis player – everything has to be perfect. I played against her last week and we had a very tough match. But there were different conditions – very cold, very heavy balls, and today I could use my weapon more and make her feel more uncomfortable. I’m very glad that I was able to make it to the top eight.”
“Of course I didn’t know what to expect this time because you never know what will happen in a match, but it definitely helped that we met last week and the conditions here were much better for my game. The bounce of the ball is a lot higher and a little warmer, so I didn’t feel like I was having as much trouble as I did in San Diego.”
“I can say that my serve was definitely not up to par today and I don’t think four points a match is the right statistic because I think I lost a lot more. But other than that, I’m very pleased that I was able to cope with the task and finish the match quickly.”
“To be honest, before this season, I had never played well here, unfortunately. So I’m very happy with my performance this year. Obviously, Indian Wells was one of my favorite tournaments, regardless of how I performed here. So, I’m even more glad that I can stay here longer.”
“Anyone who has worked on their mental side, no matter how it sounds, and it doesn’t matter whether you are a professional player or an ordinary person, knows that results do not come immediately. And I’ve been working on this for a very long time. Now it is a completely different matter, and this work has begun to bear fruit. Quite a lot of time has passed, I am gradually improving, and, yes, I am very glad that the results appeared, because I was sure that I was doing everything right. And now I can confirm this to myself.”
Marta defeated Japanese Mai Hontama in the second round. The Ukrainian went through the third round without a fight – her opponent Marketa Vondrousova withdrew from the tournament. In the 1/8 finals, Marta defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who competed in neutral status.
In the quarterfinals, Kostyuk will play with another “neutral tennis player” – Anastasia Potapova.
