Borodavko – about the collapse of the skiers: “When we called those responsible, we realized what had happened and did not dramatize”

Senior coach of the Russian national team Yuri Borodavko told that he stopped dramatizing the situation with the mass collapse of skiers during the student Spartakiad in Sochi when he telephoned those responsible for what happened.

On March 8, during a women’s race at the general start in the village of Estosadok (Krasnodar Territory), several minor skiers were injured as a result of a collapse. In total, 14 skiers failed to finish on the Laura slope.

— As I said before, falls happen quite often during many competitions. Many have written about the very serious consequences, but let’s let people look a little deeper. Literally a day later, among those who did not reach the end of the race in Sochi and were examined by doctors and taken to the hospital, only one athlete did not reach the next start. The others competed. Therefore, to say that something incredible happened there… I would say that it is a common syndrome when someone falls in front and the skiers going further into the mass start did not know what to do. Those at the rear began to clash with those at the front. If this race had been a time trial, nothing like this would have happened.

—However, when the collapse happened, did it bother you?

– Of course it was stressful. After all, these are human destinies and the need for hospitalization was felt. The first information that emerged was stressful, it caused serious concerns. But it was only when we called those in charge that we realized what had really happened and stopped dramatizing the situation. We always worry about those who were injured, but, as I understand it, no one had a particular fracture as such. Especially the open ones, as they wrote at the beginning.

And now I am even more concerned that the journalists who wrote about open fractures have not issued a public apology in the press. This actually indicates a low professional level. Maybe the journalists who wrote all the fake news should be deprived of their license so that they can print verified information,” Borodavko told .

On March 14, the executive committee of the Russian Ski Racing Federation (FLGR) held a meeting at which no violations were found in the work of the student Spartakiad jury in Sochi.

Based on the incident, the investigative department of the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Adler district of Sochi organized an inspection. The progress and results of the inspection were monitored by the investigation department.
