The Ukrainian was left without a title fight on March 30
American boxer Keith Thurman (30-1, 22 KO) was injured and forced to miss the fight against the Australian Tim Tszyu (24-0, 17 KOs) for the WBO junior middleweight title. The organizers quickly found a replacement for Keith in the person of Sebastian Fundora (20-1-1, 13 KOs).
Initially, the Thurman-Tszyu fight was supposed to be the headliner of the Premier Boxing Champions event, in the undercandle of which the Ukrainian Fundora’s fight was also planned Sergei Bogachuk (23-1, 23 KOs) for the WBC junior middleweight title. The bout was officially booked by the World Boxing Council (WBC) last November. The Ukrainian called the upcoming fight “the fight of his life.”
Now, due to force majeure circumstances, Fundora was “upgraded” to the status of a participant in the central fight of the evening. At the same time, Bogachuk was left with no destiny.
Moreover: officials, according to WBC President Mauricio Suleiman, are working to declare the Tszyu-Fundor fight a single title fight, with both WBO and WBC belts at stake.
The organizers will also decide Bogachuk’s fate on the undercard of the upcoming boxing evening. Perhaps they will be able to find an opponent for the 28-year-old Ukrainian, but this fight is unlikely to be a title fight.
Bogachuk holds the WBC Continental Americas title and is ranked second in the WBC rankings. Fundora is a former interim WBC champion, he is in 3rd position in the ranking.
