“The Russian government is actively carrying out a diplomatic campaign by sending its delegations and ambassadors, as well as representatives of ministries and other government agencies, to appeal to the governments of different countries. These actions exclude sports organizations of the target countries and demonstrate clearly of a political nature, which is contrary to the Olympic Charter and various UN resolutions.
This is Russia’s clear desire to politicize sport. The IOC Athletes’ Commission, which represents the interests of all Olympic athletes around the world, expresses its categorical opposition to the use of athletes for political purposes. The commission is concerned that athletes may be forced to participate in such politicized sporting events which would be used as part of political propaganda,” said a statement published on the official IOC website.
