Coach Kuznetsov: “Ivanchenko and Valgonen are aware of possible participation in the Olympics, they will be able to prepare”

Russian cyclists’ coach Alexander Kuznetsov told that junior world champions Alena Ivanchenko and Valeria Valgonen were aware of their possible participation in the 2024 Olympics in Paris and could prepare using the schedule of professional races.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced in December 2023 that it would allow Russian athletes who successfully qualified for the 2024 Olympics to have individual neutral status without a flag, anthem or other national symbol. The IOC also banned the participation of athletes associated with security forces or who have expressed support for the SVO. On Tuesday, it was announced that the IOC executive committee did not allow Russian athletes to participate in the athletes’ parade at the opening ceremony of the Games in Paris. The organization also said that at the 2024 Olympics, according to the most likely scenario, 36 Russian athletes will participate, who will have to sign a special document.

— Valeria, Alena, Gleb are these athletes related to you. Do you think it’s worth going there?

— As for the UCI, there are no bad papers to sign. So no problem here. The IOC still needs to understand what exists and how.

— The IOC said yesterday that there would be no new documents condemning the SVO from it.

“If not, we have to go, and whoever goes, we’ll see how he feels.” There’s still plenty of time left.

— Have you already talked with Alena and Valeria that a trip to the Olympics is possible?

– Yes, of course, they are on topic. They are all racing and training in Europe, they will have the opportunity to prepare. There are no problems, the schedule allows,” Kuznetsov told .

President of the Russian Cycling Federation Vyacheslav Ekimov previously told that among the riders who can participate in the Olympics are Alexander Vlasov, Gleb Syritsa, Tamara Dronova, Valeria Valgonen and Alena Ivanchenko.

The Paris Summer Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11.
