Athletistic/Others. The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, has stressed the importance of maintaining the independence of the Olympic movement from political influences.

In a statement released Tuesday, the IOC called on athletes and governments to refuse to participate in the Friendship Games in Russia. James MacLeod, director of the IOC department for cooperation with National Olympic Committees (NOCs), indicated that the IOC would consider possible sanctions against athletes participating in the Friendship Games.

— The politicization of sport always leads to a split. This is not only detrimental to the sport, but also to society. This is contrary to our objectives. We therefore insist that the Olympic movement remains independent of politics. This is why we take this issue so seriously,” Bach emphasized at the press conference.

The Paris Summer Olympics will take place from July 2 to August 11. The Friendship Games are scheduled for September 15-29 in Moscow.
