Athletistic/Others. International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach responded to questions about possible sanctions against athletes competing in the 2024 World Friendship Games in Russia.

On Tuesday, the IOC called on athletes and governments to withdraw from the games.

— Are any measures planned against athletes and teams participating in the World Friendship Games?

– This is a difficult question. We are not entirely clear on the final format of the tournament. The information is varied. We currently know that the World Friendship Games will not observe an anti-doping regime that meets international standards.

We also have some instructions from the World Anti-Doping Agency. They must carry out their own analysis and make a decision on how this will affect the situation of Russian sport and what it can mean for the athletes concerned and for the National Olympic Committees. “We do not yet have enough information to draw definitive conclusions about the possible consequences,” Bach explained at a press conference.

  • Bach: “When the ROC starts following the rules of the Olympic movement, we will be happy to see them”
