Ilya Malinin won the World Figure Skating Championships with a world record in free skating

American figure skater Ilya Malinin became the winner of the singles tournament at the World Championships in Montreal, Canada.

After the short program, the 19-year-old skater took third place in the protocol. But the next performance with six quadruple jumps helped the athlete reach the highest level. Malinin set a world record for most points in the free skate (227.79), beating Nathan Chen’s score (224.92) from 2019. At the same time, Chen continues to hold the record for world for the total – 335.3 points. Malinin scored 333.76 in two rentals.

The silver medal of the competition was won by the Japanese Yuma Kagiyama (309.65), the bronze medal of the tournament went to the Frenchman Adam Xiao Him Fa (284.39). Shoma Uno, who was in the lead after the short program, finished the competition in fourth place (280.85). A student of Russian coach Eteri Tutberidze, Georgian Nika Egadze came 13th (241.55).

Malinin was born in the United States to the family of figure skaters Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skornyakov, who competed internationally for Uzbekistan. For the American athlete, this world champion title was the first of his career.
