“The last few weeks have been a challenge for me.” Malinin could withdraw from the World Cup, where he set a world record

American figure skater Ilya Malinin shared his emotions after winning the World Championships in Montreal.

Based on the sum of the two programs, Malinin scored 333.76 points (105.97 + 227.79). Malinin set a world record for most points in a free skate, beating Nathan Chen’s feat (224.92) from 2019. At the same time, Chen continues to hold the world record for total – 335.3 points.

“It really means a lot to me.” The last few weeks have been a mental and physical challenge for me to overcome. I even thought about whether or not to go to the World Championships, but at the last minute I was like, “I want to do this.” I want to come here. I want to see what I can show on the ice. “And I’m happy that I decided to do this,” Malinin said, as quoted by the press service of the American Figure Skating Federation.

Malinin was born in the United States to the family of figure skaters Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skornyakov, who competed internationally for Uzbekistan. For the 19-year-old American athlete, this world champion title was the first of his career.
