American figure skater Ilya Malinin was confident in his victory at the World Championships in Montreal, said World Cup bronze medalist Elena Radionova.
Malinin won the first world championship title at the singles tournament in Montreal, Canada, by performing six quadruple jumps during his free program, including a 4.5 Axel. The American also set a world record for most points scored on the second day of competition (227.79), beating Nathan Chen’s score (224.92) from 2019. Malinin, 19, scored 333.76 points in two skates.
“It seems to me that Ilya Malinin’s victory was expected, because he was the main favorite for gold. He is the only one with a unique element – a quadruple axel, so he has the most difficult content. Midway through the season he was skating pretty consistently, so I think it would be more of a surprise if he didn’t win.
I think he himself understood that he was aiming for gold, and everything was natural, he showed himself well and it was a wonderful free program. We see the result – a world record, so he took the place he expected,” Radionova quotes “Championship”.
Malinin was born in the United States to the family of figure skaters Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skornyakov, who competed internationally for Uzbekistan.
