Rebrov: Iceland is a strong team, but we must focus on our game

The blue-yellow coach noted that the team played poorly in the previous match and is preparing to rehabilitate

Head coach Ukrainian national team Sergey Rebrov spoke about the upcoming match with Iceland in the final qualifying playoffs European Championship 2024.

“Yes, there is a possibility to see a scheme with two forwards,” the coach said.

“I think that not only the players of the Ukrainian national team are under pressure. Every day we receive rocket attacks. The players understand who they are playing for, to help people, to give them emotions. I can’t say that this is pressure for us. It is very important to do what we love and can do. Tomorrow we must focus on the game and not think about other matters.”

“Iceland is a very strong team with quality players. But I believe in my players and we must concentrate on our game. And tomorrow, with the support of our fans, we must use our strengths.”

“I always have great pleasure working for Ukraine. Now this is even more important. I love working with players who understand me and try to do something with me. It’s a great honor to work for Ukraine at this time.”

“Gygankov? He has been training for several days, tomorrow we will make a decision on his participation. The most important thing now is his physical condition.”

“I don’t know how ready Zinchenko is to play two matches. We haven’t decided yet whether he will play. I think he deserves to play, he is a patriot. Unfortunately, he missed a lot of time at Arsenal.”

“I don’t remember that I scored against Iceland. Now Iceland has improved a lot as a football country, opening many fields and schools. This is a completely different team than when I was a player.”

“I think we played poorly against Bosnia and Herzegovina. We should all think about this. We also had a conversation at the meeting. I’m sure we’ll go into tomorrow’s game in a different mood.”

“This morning, all the players saw what was happening in Ukraine: shelling of Kyiv, Odessa. Of course tomorrow the players will be angrier, more charged and more motivated.”

“I have a positive attitude towards the increase in media activity of players. This will help them. We must be open during this time. Fans need to understand what players think. I am not against that. This is Shevchenko’s idea to provide more information to fans.”

Ukraine’s nominally “home” match with Iceland will take place in Wroclaw, Poland, on March 26. The meeting starts at 21:45 Kyiv time. The match will be judged by a French team of referees led by Clement Turpin. The winner of the confrontation will advance to the 2024 European Championship, where they will play in Quartet E with Belgium, Slovakia and Romania.

Euro 2024 will take place in Germany from June 14 to July 14, 2024. The matches of the European Championship will be held in arenas in Berlin, Cologne, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart.
