Gabigol suspended for two years for attempting to falsify a doping test

The player declares that he did not attempt to cheat and will appeal to CAS

Attack Flamengo Gabriel Barbosa (Gabigol) suspended for two years for attempting to falsify a doping test.

The case was considered by the Anti-Doping Sports Court of Brazil, the maximum penalty under the article on sample tampering was a four-year ban. The judges approved the disqualification in a split decision of five to four. The forward said he would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.

It is reported that Gabigol tried to disrupt an unscheduled doping test in April 2023. The forward ignored anti-doping controllers for a long time, swore and used rude words. Then he appeared before the officials without warning. While taking a urine sample, the athlete covered himself from the controllers, which is prohibited by the rules.

The Anti-Doping Service collected tests from several more Flamengo players. In the report, proctors pointed out Gabigol’s violations, characterizing them as an attempt to cheat during the test.

The athlete’s lawyers insisted that the player had to wait at least two hours after training before taking the test so that the result did not differ from the norm. The defense also pointed to a violation of procedure on the part of the anti-doping authorities.

Gabigol’s disqualification officially starts from the date of the test, April 8, 2023. The player’s current contract with Flamengo expires in December 2024.
