The multiple Olympic champion accused of “black racism”

Track and field legend Michael Johnson has been accused of ‘black racism’ after he questioned the legality of Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan’s 100m hurdles world record at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene. In the semifinals, she covered the distance in 12.12 seconds, surpassing the feat of American Kendra Harrison (12.20), set in 2016.

I don’t believe the time is correct. The world record was broken by 0.08! In race two, we were first shown a winning time of 12.53. A few seconds later, the dashboard displays 12.43. Rounding by 0.01 is fine. But at 0.1…” Johnson originally posted on social media.

After that, Johnson, 54, who won four Olympic gold medals and eight World Championship gold medals during her glittering career in athletics, received some of the criticism and accusations on social media.

“Michael Johnson, are you naturally that stupid?” Why don’t you put your energy into stroke recovery, you black racist! — wrote one of the users.

Another fan commented: ‘Just because it’s not an American result doesn’t mean the timing is wrong’, while another social media user added: ‘Would you question the record if an American broke the record?”

To these accusations, Johnson wrote, “As a commentator, my job is to comment. Watched the times of 28 athletes (not one athlete), wondering if the timing system was working. I was attacked, accused of racism and called into question the talent of the athlete.
