Walters: Kambosos will beat Lomachenko if he can use his strength

The Ukrainian’s former opponent considers the Australian boxer to be the favorite

Jamaican boxer Nicholas Walters believes the Australian George Kambosos favorite in a fight with a former world champion in three weight categories Vasily Lomachenko.

“Lomachenko is a special fighter. But Kambosos is also special. Look what he did to Teofimo Lopez. There is nothing to hide – he is a very good fighter. “I’ve seen him in the gym, he’s fast on the pads, he looks good and he looks confident.”

“If he can step into the ring with that much confidence and maintain his hand speed, he should be a serious contender. If he can use his power – like Lopez did with Lomachenko – and keep Vasyl at bay, then he can pull off the win. All it takes in boxing is one punch that can change everything. “George just needs to listen to his side and do what he wants rather than try to do what the other guy wants.”

“This is a great fight. In the fight, Kambosos will have youth, speed and strength against Lomachenko’s cunning and IQ. George is smart too. It will be a great fight, but I’m not going to pick a winner. I know people will love this fight; it will be war.”

Walters is Vasily’s former opponent; in 2016, the Ukrainian defeated Nicholas ahead of schedule in a fight for the WBO world champion title in the second featherweight division. The Jamaican returned to the ring in 2023, defeating Luis Diaz Marmol.

The fight between Vasily and George for the vacant IBF lightweight belt will take place on May 12. The event, which also includes two undercard fights, will take place at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, starting at approximately 5 a.m. Kyiv time.

Let us remember that in May 2023, Lomachenko lost to Devin Haney in a fight for the title of absolute world champion. In turn, Kambosos defeated Briton Maxi Hughes in his last fight, winning the IBO lightweight title.
