Eddie Howe: Tonali’s illness did not go away when he moved to England

The midfielder is accused of violating betting rules

Mentor Newcastle Eddie Howe spoke about the situation with the midfielder Sandro Tonali. According to the coach, his ward needs urgent psychological help.

“Sandro Tonali has really suffered enough. This disease did not go away when he moved to England… And people should look at it that way and not push him and punish him even more, because I don’t think that reflects the root of the whole problem.”

In October 2023, Tonali was officially suspended from football for 10 months due to his involvement in illegal betting. The midfielder placed bets on matches involving Milan, his former team.

Tonali’s ban applies to all official football competitions around the world under the auspices of FIFA. Thus, Sandro will be able to return to the field no earlier than August 27, 2024. He will miss not only the rest of the current season, but also the 2024 European Championship.

Tonali moved from Milan to Newcastle in the summer of 2023. The transfer cost the English side over 60 million euros. Sandro has one goal in 12 matches for Soroki this season.

It was recently reported that Tonali allegedly placed 50 bets on football matches between August 12 and October 12, 2023 – after his move to Newcastle. The 23-year-old Italian has until April 5 to testify.

Newcastle are in 10th place in the Premier League. The Magpies will play their next match on March 30 against West Ham.
