Skier Maria Istomina said she had the chance to catch the Olympic champion Veronica Stepanova in the pursuit race for the Russian Cup, but she made a tactical error.
On Wednesday, Istomina took second place in the pursuit race at the PhosAgro Russian Cup final in cross-country skiing, losing 26.9 seconds to winner Stepanova.
— The impressions of the race are twofold. I’m a little angry with myself, but I’m happy that I managed to win the prizes. It’s a good result for me. The race went well, the weather was cool, the distance was good. The skis work well too, but last year there was a disaster here, the skis were immobile. There is now good hard snow in winter.
— Are you considering participating in the uphill race?
— I plan to do the whole tour, but we’ll see how it goes. An uphill run is like a normal run, you just need to distribute the forces well over the distance. The mountain is a very difficult challenge.
— Was it realistic to catch up with Stepanova, who was 15 seconds ahead of you at the start?
— There was such an option, it was possible. But I did a bad thing tactically, because of this I first lost on the track, then I had to make up the gap. In the second lap I already had enough, I was pulling the whole group, it was hard. “I will work on my mistakes,” reports the correspondent, according to Istomina.
