Athletistic/Chess. Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi participated in the first match of the 2024 Candidates Tournament, which began in Toronto (Canada).

In his first match of the tournament, Nepomniachtchi faced Azerbaijani chess player Nijat Abasov, who replaced Magnus Carlsen. Nepomniachtchi played with black pieces. The first game ended peacefully after 34 moves, both chess players won 0.5 points.

The 2024 Candidates Tournament will last until April 22. The winner of the competition will meet the current world champion, China’s Ding Liren, to compete for the title of world chess champion. It was Liren who defeated Nepomniachtchi in the last world title match.
