“If my athlete beats Bolshunov in an uphill race, I will leave in a dinosaur costume” – Sorin

Coach Egor Sorine said he would go to the awards ceremony in a dinosaur costume again if any of the skiers in his group beat the three-time Olympic champion Alexander Bolshunov during the freestyle mass start at the final of the PhosAgro Russian Cup in Kirovsk.

On Tuesday, the head coach of the Russian national team, Sorin, appeared at the awards ceremony after the men’s sprint freestyle race, dressed in a dinosaur costume. The victory in the sprint was won by an athlete from Sorin’s group, Sergei Ardashev. Bolshunov failed to qualify for the sprint final. On Friday, Bolshunov won the classic time trial, and the skier from Sorin’s group, Savely Korostelev, became second (+6 seconds).

— You staged a performance when your athletes bypassed Bolshunov and went to the award ceremony in dinosaur costumes. Are you planning to do something new?

— We are not planning anything new. Bolshunov has had a pretty long streak. Now we see we can fight him, and the guys are fighting.

— How did the athletes react to such an idea?

– They supported. At first they said that our massage therapist suggested that the athlete would wear a dinosaur costume if he beat Bolshunov. But they decided to replay the game so that the coach would show up at the awards ceremony in a dinosaur costume. If one of our guys wins in the mountains, we’ll go out too. Well, according to the results of the mini-tour.

On Sunday, the tournament will end with an uphill race: a mass start of 10 km freestyle.
