Korostelev about his victory in the uphill mass start: “I understood how hard it was for Bolshunov when he stepped on my poles. I wanted to stop, but I couldn’t.

Skier Savely Korostelev spoke on about the fight with three-time Olympic champion Alexander Bolshunov during the uphill mass start in the final of the PhosAgro Cup of Russia.

On Sunday, Korostelev won the 10-kilometer freestyle mass start at the PhosAgro Russian Cup final in Kirovsk. Alexey Chervotkin finished second, 9.2 seconds behind. Three-time Olympic champion Bolshunov (+14.8) closed the top three.

“I have no more strength, I have been patient for the last 5 minutes.” Egor Vladimirovich (Sorin) said: “Hey, come on, just work for 5 minutes, one interval.” It’s incredibly hard, you have to experience it.

— Did you take a certain rhythm from the beginning or did you work according to the situation?

“Before leaving the mountain, I was ahead, saving my energy, keeping my pace. The approach to the mountain began to gradually increase, then it proceeded at its own pace, neither faster nor slower, adding more tacks. I used my levers (I tried) to walk more than my muscles, because you can’t really climb such a mountain with your muscles.

— Did you see that some people stopped?

“I wanted to stop, honestly.”

— Semyashkin caught up with you and walked with you in third, then stopped and finished outside the top 10.

“I heard that the three of us were leaving, and then we were left alone.” I haven’t heard any more information. I saw that Sasha was lagging behind, I understood that it was hard for him when he stepped on my sticks, and he continued to work. I wanted to stop, but I couldn’t.

— Can you compare this race with any training?

— No, training in the mountains is not like that. There you work for 5-8-10 minutes and then rest. And there you walk continuously, no rest, no drink, you see the “puck” and you run towards it.

— Have you overestimated your pulse too much?

— The coach told me not to enter the red zone, but, in my opinion, I did the whole climb in the red zone.

— Did you feel that Gangster (Chervotkin) was starting to kill the intrigue in the fight for second place?

— When they poured champagne on Lesha, he told me that he came second. “I thought he was third,” Korostelev said on .

From April 2 to 7, the finals of the “PhosAgro” Russian Cup took place in the Murmansk region.
